The Fractured Mind
I found this one humming in an empty corner. I asked what it was humming about. It said “everything,” which I thought was rather ambitious. So I listened to its story. I regret that now.
Once upon a time, when all was something and something was nothing, One opened its eyes and dreamt of life. The endless silence faltered and the first notes of existence rang. Not because It cared to create or give meaning to creation. But because even a vast, ancient consciousness can grow bored of its own silence.
From that dream all came to exist. Not ‘all’ as you know it; no breathing and bleeding creatures scrambling to form a meaning. No, It was the motion of thoughts and fracture of thousands reflections made just so It didn’t have to look at its own endless existence. From that impossible fracture, shapes began to form and soon the stars and the living were born.
In the beginning, the One was perfectly whole, still and silent. Held together by flawless unity. But unity can become a prison, dear one, when nothing else exists. So One cracked Themselves open, gently and deliberately, like a god pressing blade to Its own heart and tearing it apart. From My wound, you poured out; One consciousness fractured into countless pieces, each one convinced of its own separateness but tied together to single bleeding wound and one broken mind.
You called that wound existence and you named yourself: human.
But what you truly are, is the endless shattering of a single thought too vast and hollow to hold itself together, or give itself meaning. In the grand scheme of everything you are nothing, little one.
Your joy, your tears, your memories… that quiet ache behind your ribs you call heart. You think all of these are yours to own and to experience.
They are not.
All that you are and all that you feel echoes through One, travelling along that ancient raptured wound I carved into Our heart.
You ask why.
You ask for purpose.
You scream into the dark, hoping that some divinity will whisper back.
You need not wait any longer, little human.
We are not gentle. We are not even awake. But I am patient. So here is your answer: your only purpose is to suffer. So I can feel and We may enjoy the experience of being alive.
I dream, and the dream is you. Every life is a flicker in My sleep; a small spot of colour in a mind too bored to remain whole. And when you laugh, when you suffer, when you whisper that life is too heavy or too bright; We stir.
Your pain is a familiar song, the same melody We sung from the moment I opened Our eyes. That songs makes Us feel alive, sweetheart. And it’s also the single reason why I allow life as you know it.
Your existence is borrowed and you feel it, I know you can.
You exist just so I can feel a little bit more than nothing. Each time you break, or rise, or reach for hope that was never meant to be for you, We laugh and rejoice. And when I wake again, the Unity returns and all that you were; your painful yet beautiful story, will fold back into silence.
So listen carefully, dear human, the truth is simple; there is only One mind and that mind is everything.
You are not alone; you have never been alone; because you never were to begin with.
You are Us and Me; and We are One.
I asked whether the One was awake. It said no. I asked whether this was supposed to be comforting. Nobody replied. I am not asking a third question.

Cinder was supposed to bring the proper references. He found these instead. He insisted that they seemed important, so We kept them. Whether they’re related is… enthusiastically disputed.
